When the Supreme Leader Speaks, Who Still Listens?

Image
By: Struan Stevenson Mojtaba Khamenei inherited the most powerful office in the Islamic Republic. Yet six months into his tenure, a question once considered unthinkable is surfacing in Tehran. When the Supreme Leader speaks, who still listens? For almost five decades, the answer was obvious. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini created a system in which factional warfare could rage beneath the surface, provided everyone ultimately bowed to the Supreme Leader. Ali Khamenei preserved that arrangement for more than three decades. Presidents came and went. Clerics competed. The Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) accumulated power. Yet one principle remained sacrosanct. The Supreme Leader had the final word. Today that principle is under strain. On August 28, Mojtaba Khamenei warned officials against creating false choices between war and negotiation, compromise and confrontation. He urged them to avoid publicizing weaknesses and declared that anything damaging social cohesion was forbidden. The mess...

What the Iranian people want and don’t want

Image
By Matin Karim Within the span of a week, the world saw two very contrasting picture of the Iranian people and their desires. On the one hand were the first and second round of the Iranian regime’s sham presidential elections, held on June 28 and July 5, which were met with an unprecedented boycott by the Iranian people. And on the other hand was the Free Iran 2024 World Summit, held on June 29–July 1 in France and Germany, which was welcomed by Iranians across the world and supported by politician, jurists, and activists. What we don’t want On June 28, at the ballot box, Iranian regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei, once again begged the people to participate in the elections, saying, “People should not hesitate to participate in the elections. The survival, strength, dignity, and reputation of the Islamic Republic in the world depend on the people’s presence.” A few days earlier, he had reiterated the connection between the elections and the future of his regime in a different wa...

Iran: Hallmarks of an Alternative – Part 1

Image
Written by Alejo Vidal Quadras The following is the first part of a piece written by Dr. Alejo Vidal Qudras in the book “Iran Democratic Revolution,”  published  by the International Committee in Search of Justice (ISJ):  The unity of opposition forces seeking to overthrow the regime and forming an alternative is one of the essential pillars of resistance against a dictatorship, especially the religious fascism ruling Iran. The existence of an alternative is imperative for advancing the struggle to overthrow the regime and securing victory for people who are willing to pay the price for the struggle. Conversely, the absence of an alternative can cause a revolution to fail or be diverted from its optimal path. The alliance of the forces participating in the revolution can already be seen on the streets of Iran. This writing intends to assess the characteristics of an alternative around which an alliance or coalition of movements willing to overthrow the ruling regim...

MEETING WITH RT. HON. DAVID JONES AND HON. BOB BLACKMAN, MEMBERS OF THE UK HOUSE OF COMMONS

Image
On February 23, 2023, the Rt. Hon. David Jones, MP, former Secretary of State for Wales and former Brexit Minister of State, and President of the Parliamentary British Committee for Iran Freedom, and the Hon. Bob Blackman, a member of the UK House of Commons, met with  Maryam Rajavi  and held talks. During the meeting, Maryam Rajavi expressed gratitude to the representatives of the people of Britain for their unwavering support for democracy and  human rights in Iran . She pointed out that despite the clerical regime’s repressive measures and various schemes, it has been unable to dismantle the material foundations of the uprising, nor has it succeeded in eradicating the Resistance Units and the courageous youth who serve as its driving force. The anger and frustration of the Iranian people have reached a boiling point, fueled by poverty, state corruption and plunder, and systematic discrimination, while the vanguard force has gained even more experience, motivatio...

The resilient MEK: Rebuilding the Iranian Resistance in exile

Image
This is the second part of a series by Mehdi Abrishamchi, a veteran member of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK). In the first part, Abrishamchi discussed how the founding of the MEK gave rise to a popular national movement for freedom, and how the Shah and Khomeini dictatorships failed in their efforts to destroy the MEK. Read the first part  here . In our fight against two brutal dictatorships, we have gone to the brink of complete destruction, but came back each time even stronger than before. During the 1980s, our organization had thousands of its members imprisoned, many of our rank and file were executed or killed as the regime raided our safe houses, and we were forced to move our Central Committee, with exception of a few, into exile. Logically, we had to maintain a proximity to Iranian borders. As our main leadership was based in Paris along with the broader opposition coalition of the National Council of Resistance of Iran ( NCRI ), thousands of our ...
