When the Supreme Leader Speaks, Who Still Listens?

Image
By: Struan Stevenson Mojtaba Khamenei inherited the most powerful office in the Islamic Republic. Yet six months into his tenure, a question once considered unthinkable is surfacing in Tehran. When the Supreme Leader speaks, who still listens? For almost five decades, the answer was obvious. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini created a system in which factional warfare could rage beneath the surface, provided everyone ultimately bowed to the Supreme Leader. Ali Khamenei preserved that arrangement for more than three decades. Presidents came and went. Clerics competed. The Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) accumulated power. Yet one principle remained sacrosanct. The Supreme Leader had the final word. Today that principle is under strain. On August 28, Mojtaba Khamenei warned officials against creating false choices between war and negotiation, compromise and confrontation. He urged them to avoid publicizing weaknesses and declared that anything damaging social cohesion was forbidden. The mess...

As Europe searches for a way out of the Iran crisis, Iran’s democratic opposition shows its resilience

Image
By EU Reporter Correspondent Six months into the US-Iran war, and as Europe grapples with finding a solution to a crisis that has spread across the region, Iranian activists across the Islamic Republic risked their lives last week by taking part in demonstrations, impromptu parades and acts of disobedience to mark the 62nd anniversary of the founding of Iran’s leading pro-democracy opposition group. What makes this particularly relevant for Brussels is that Europe is examining ways not only to contain the immediate crisis, but also to address the broader question of what political forces inside Iran could ultimately shape the country’s future. Meanwhile, members of the same movement in exile held an election to choose a new occupant of the organisation’s highest office. The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) was originally established to promote revolution against the hereditary dictatorship of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. But after that revolution came about in 1979, ...

Fake votes and pretender reformists won’t save Khamenei’s regime

Image
By Sadegh Pashm-Foroush Five days after Iran’s people massively boycotted the first round of the regime’s sham presidential elections on June 28, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was forced to admit, “In the first stage, participation was less than we expected,” and added dismissively, “If anyone thinks those who did not vote did so because they opposed the system, this understanding is completely wrong.” He then openly laid the groundwork for fraud and manipulation, promising higher participation in the second round. The desperate supreme leader, despite repeated pleas and requests, faced a  91% boycott  in the second round. He ridiculously combined the fraudulent votes from both rounds and claimed, “The people came out… they filled the ballot boxes with over 55 million votes in two stages!… This great movement, in confronting the artificial uproar of the election boycott created by the enemies of the Iranian nation to instill despair and deadlock, is a brilliant and unforg...

What the Iranian people want and don’t want

Image
By Matin Karim Within the span of a week, the world saw two very contrasting picture of the Iranian people and their desires. On the one hand were the first and second round of the Iranian regime’s sham presidential elections, held on June 28 and July 5, which were met with an unprecedented boycott by the Iranian people. And on the other hand was the Free Iran 2024 World Summit, held on June 29–July 1 in France and Germany, which was welcomed by Iranians across the world and supported by politician, jurists, and activists. What we don’t want On June 28, at the ballot box, Iranian regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei, once again begged the people to participate in the elections, saying, “People should not hesitate to participate in the elections. The survival, strength, dignity, and reputation of the Islamic Republic in the world depend on the people’s presence.” A few days earlier, he had reiterated the connection between the elections and the future of his regime in a different wa...

The implications of the failed presidential election for Iran’s regime

Image
By Sadegh Pashm-Foroush To understand the scale of the Iranian regime’s defeat by the nationwide boycott of the Iranian people in the 2024 elections, we must look back at previous events. On September 18, 2020, Iranian regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei, in a meeting with the plainclothes agents under the title “representatives of student organizations,” said that the remedy for the regime and the way to overcome its widespread crises was a “young and Hezbollahi government. By “young” and “Hezbollahi,” he meant, as he had previously mentioned, employing criminals and executioners like the terror master Qassem Soleimani and Ebrahim Raisi in the executive power structure. He thought that by elevating the most notorious executioner of the 1988 massacre, Ebrahim Raisi, and removing the useless and troublesome elements from his system, he could achieve, in his own words, a “young Hezbollahi government,” which he saw as a solution to the regime’s problems. In those days, he was very co...

Free Iran 2024 Summit calls for accountability for the human rights abuses of mullahs’ regime

Image
By Matin Karim The third day of the Free Iran 2024 World Summit, titled “Crimes Against Humanity and Accountability for Perpetrators,” held featured a series of speeches by prominent international figures with a focus on the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses, especially against dissidents and political opponents. They expressed strong support for the Iranian resistance movement, highlighting the regime’s human rights abuses and advocating for global recognition and backing of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) led by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi. Speakers emphasized the necessity of justice, accountability, and international pressure to end the regime’s oppressive practices and pave the way for a free, democratic, and non-nuclear Iran. In her keynote speech, Mrs. Rajavi commemorated the martyrs of the struggle for freedom and those who continue to fight. “Iran holds a contemporary world record in many forms of repression, including the imprisonment and torture of at least...

Iran’s regime threatens diaspora with extradition following Free Iran rally

Image
By Shamsi Saadati A few days after the Free Iran 2024 World Summit, in which a majority of 34 legislatures and 4,000 parliamentarians in 50 countries worldwide expressed their support for the Iranian people and their Resistance movement, on Tuesday, July 9, a minor cleric, acting as a judge in the  theatrical “trial”  of 104 members of the Iranian Resistance, reflected the fear of the regime and said: “This court declares that if, from now on, Iranians abroad form or attend meetings anywhere in the world at the invitation of the defendants in this case, a red notice will be issued for them in accordance with international conventions; therefore, the head of this court asks the Attorney General and the Foreign Minister to ensure that if Iranians abroad attend any sessions at the invitation of the defendants in this case, it will be considered as support for the [People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)] and they will be subject to criminal prosecution in court,...

A global cry for an end to the appeasement policy toward Iran’s regime

Image
By Matin Karim The annual Free Iran summit, which was held from June 30 to July 3, was a global call to world leaders to correct their failed policy toward Iran’s regime. The summit’s message, which was backed by the majority of 29 parliaments and an open letter signed by 117 former world leaders, spoke of the disastrous outcome of the policy of appeasement toward the mullahs’ regime ruling Iran and warned world leaders to take a firm stance toward this regime. The four-day event once again showed the capacity of the Iranian Resistance to rally the world and send a global warning about the imperative to deal with the threats of the religious fascism ruling Iran. In addition to 500 distinguished personalities who spoke at the four-day event, more than 3,600 parliamentarians from 40 countries added their support by signing statements which underlined the need for and end to the appeasement policy. Some of the speakers at the event drew a comparison between the mullahs’ regime and H...

The resilient MEK: Rebuilding the Iranian Resistance in exile

Image
This is the second part of a series by Mehdi Abrishamchi, a veteran member of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK). In the first part, Abrishamchi discussed how the founding of the MEK gave rise to a popular national movement for freedom, and how the Shah and Khomeini dictatorships failed in their efforts to destroy the MEK. Read the first part  here . In our fight against two brutal dictatorships, we have gone to the brink of complete destruction, but came back each time even stronger than before. During the 1980s, our organization had thousands of its members imprisoned, many of our rank and file were executed or killed as the regime raided our safe houses, and we were forced to move our Central Committee, with exception of a few, into exile. Logically, we had to maintain a proximity to Iranian borders. As our main leadership was based in Paris along with the broader opposition coalition of the National Council of Resistance of Iran ( NCRI ), thousands of our ...
